This paper reviews the motivation and business case for the use of condition monitoring for rail transport. It proposes a new (RCM)2 strategy by combining remote condition monitoring and reliability-centred maintenance to improve asset reliability, extend its life and achieve a reduction in whole-life cycle cost of assets.
