This paper has been prepared for the IET Railway Signalling and Control Systems course in June 2006. It deals with signalling control on main line railways, with the focus on modern systems in the UK. After a short introduction it falls into two main parts: Part 1 describes the IECC® (Integrated Electronic Control Centre) technology used extensively on Network Rail, and which course participants will see on their visit to the York signalling control centre of Network Rail.; Part 2 considers the impact of the migration towards ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) on the future development of signalling control.
