The structural behaviour of open ships does not conform with the analytical theory normally used. Especially in the forward part of an open ship considerable discrepancies can be found between theory and reality. By closer interpretation of results from finite element calculations it is possible to explain the snaking phenomenon of open ships. Secondary bending stresses of considerable magnitude may occur in the deck structure.
