Data from literature indicate that in marine propellers appreciable deviations from the nominal stress conditions are caused by ships motions. If these motions are the results of wave action, they can be determined by spectral analysis, if response characteristics are available. In a case study a computer simulation of ships motion velocity is executed and the resulting blade load deviations are calculated in various weather conditions. The load record over one year sailing is modified to a probability distribution of stress cycles. Herewith, taking into account the fatigue properties of Ni-Al-bronze and the presence of self-stresses, the fatigue damage accumulation according Miners rule is calculated. General conclusions regarding safe propeller design are presented.
