Approximate formulae are presented for the response of marine risers to random waves, floater motions and current. The formulae are given in terms of analytical expressions for the vertical distribution, magnitude and statistical properties of riser deflection, angle and bending moment. The expressions are particularly useful for establishing trends in riser response, as for example in the preliminary design stages of a riser system, and for making comparative studies. A worked example shows how the formulae can be used in practical riser design problems.
