About two years ago the author of this paper went out on a Travelling Scholarship, sponsored by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. The intention was to collect as much information on the matter of contra-rotating propulsion as possible. The paper presented herewith gives some of the results obtained during this time and expresses the author’s personal opinion in all points.

The author gratefully ackowledges the contribution of a great number of firms in making available much valuable information. He is deeply indebted to the Committee of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for the grant of a one-year Travelling Scholarship, being very conscious that without this the present paper could not have been written.

Furthermore the author wishes to thank the Committee in general for permission to publish this paper and in particular for permission to present it on this very occasion, as Italy is one of the countries where contra-rotating propulsion has been a matter of special interest ever since [19], [20], [22].
