If a sufficiently detailed electronic computer program for ship designs is established and extended by a treatment of the presumable operating costs, if, moreover, the solely decisive economic criterion of shipbuilding is clearly understood, it will be possible to design better and best possible ship: using the methods of modern Operations Research. The example of an optimization of the service speed is given to illustrate the particular significance of this influencing factor as well as the absolutely real background which has recently led to the construction of fast cargo liners.
