The following article describes at the outset the present-day tendencies in the use of the marine Diesel engine, and presents a new Sulzer design, referring to its possible applications. Heavy fuel oil problems are discussed, together with results obtained from various tests. The prototype engine is then described with special reference to the use of heavy fuel and the application of welding, together with the overhauling and maintenance aspect. The shop trial results are given and these are followed by a few notes on future development with special reference to supercharging.
