The Reef Runway will be located at Honolulu International Airport (HIA) on the fringing coral reef, seaward of Keehi Lagoon, in Mamala Bay. The primary purpose for the construction of the Reef Runway is to improve the environment for the community by reducing noise levels and improving safety, and it will meet the operational requirements of HIA through the 1980's. Keehi Lagoon is a recreational area for boating, sailing, sport fishing, water-skiing, and surfing. The Reef Runway will divide the lagoon and reduce the area available for recreation. (Author)
