The report presents the effects on traffic operations as a result of converting a section of existing four-lane (unidirectional) freeway to five lanes. The conversion was accomplished by reducing the lane width to 11 feet and utilizing the existing paved shoulder. Travel time through the section during periods of peak flow has been substantially reduced even though the peak period demand has shown a 10% increase. Operation on the 11 foot lanes is satisfactory and during a four-month period of operation the accident rate has been reduced. The report points out that the restriping is a temporary measure aimed at reducing congestion until permanent improvements can be made. (BPR abstract)
