Details of the Spacelab concept are described as well as its technical capabilities. These include, apart from the normal laboratory-like structural and electrical support, an environmental control system permitting manned operations of the experiment in a shirt-sleeve atmosphere and a sophisticated command and data management system. Access to the space environment is provided on pallets and by airlocks. Some examples are given of Spacelab's utilization for space research.
