After a review in 1979, the approach for updating of the ESA Technological Research Program was reoriented. The need for this reorientation stemmed from the increasing technological complexities of the spacecraft that will be developed in Europe in the 1980s and 1990s and the consequent difficulty in selecting research items to be funded from a limited budget. To assist the choice, a detailed analysis was made of trends in each of the technical disciplines required for the Agency's spacecraft and six major technological themes, subdivided into thirteen projects were derived to serve as a focus for the most important technological research undertakings for the coming decade.
