A definition and delimitation of the STOL concept is given with reference to future requirements of STOL traffic. Two characteristic reference aircraft are selected and described based on this definition. The reference parameters for related operational and check-in areas, as well as obstacle clearance surfaces and building restrictions zones, are derived. Airport models comparable to conventional airports are the result. Taking into account the possible STOL traffic tasks and expected noise performance, a conclusion is drawn as to the most effective arrangement of STOL airport installation in populated regions.
