A recursive, real-time, terrain-aided navigation algorithm, AFTI/SITAN, was designed for use on the Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI) F16 aircraft. The algorithm implemented in a Zilog Z8001 microprocessor, can reliably locate the aircraft's position within a 926-m (0.5 nm) CEP circle and accurately estimate its position continuously (3 Hz). The design and execution of the algorithm are described, and simulation results using actual flight test data are presented. A median accuracy of less than 100 m was achieved over gently rolling, forested terrain using cartographic-based digital terrain elevation data. (ERA citation 10:021417)
