Although operating in a relatively more benign environment than a fast jet combat aircraft, a maritime reconnaissance aircraft is a complex weapon system which has a highly integrated set of subsystems. Future developments in the ASW/ASVW scene will strengthen the requirement for the weapon system to be a fully integrated member of a higher order system. A move to carry out more research and development in industry, as opposed to government establishments, has helped to involve companies in higher order system investigation. This paper discusses how the concept of this greater system can be investigated, the implications for the platforms involved and the tools which could assist in these tasks. NATO Furnished. (kr)
