Successful commercialization of natural gas fueled vehicles requires the development of lightweight, low-cost fuel containment vessels. In an effort to reduce vessel weight and cost, composite overwrapped vessels were developed using plastic instead of conventional metal liners. A number of liner materials and composite laminates were evaluated. High performance vessels were fabricated and tested with some success, but failed to meet qualification requirements. The concept and process were validated but modifications to the design would be needed to reliably meet specification requirements.
