Ideas behind 'aircraft parameter identification' are presented in an historical context and an attempt is made to project their effect on future developments in the theory and practice of dynamic flight test techniques. In particular, the work of O.H. Gerlach in the analysis of a method for the measurement of performance and stability and control characteristics in unsteady symmetrical flight is discussed. Flight test maneuvers and instrumentation are described.
