Intersection accidents are a major safety problem on highways. In rural areas, 27 percent of all accidents and 17 percent of fatal accidents occur at intersections. The use of flashing yellow-red beacons is considered desirable for controlling intersection traffic. However, reviews of 'Before and After' accident experience at some intersections controlled with yellow-red flashing beacons show that reductions in accident rates and severity may occur only for the short term. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the long-term effects of overhead center-mounted yellow-red flashing beacons.
