The shielding on wire bundles contributes significantly towards an aircrafts continued airworthiness by maintaining electromagnetic protection over the lifetime of an aircraft. This study was conducted to examine the degradation effects on the electrical characteristics of the aircraft wiring harness shielding due to aircraft aging and exposure to environmental conditions. Harness shield loop resistance can be an important indicator of the quality of the electrical bonds between the cable shield, backshells, connectors, and metallic structures. This study was also done to compare loop resistance measurement with visual inspection, to predict or identify unsafe conditions for the aircraft, and to determine whether loop resistance measurements are adequate to detect shield degradation or if swept-frequency measurements are also required.
