In a general survey, the author first discusses the limitations of convergent nozzles at supersonic speeds, and the advantages of using convergent-divergent Laval nozzles at such speeds. The pressure distributions acting in convergent and Laval nozzles are considered and illustrated by figures. The effects of the flight velocity and altitude on the thrust developed by Laval nozzles are fully discussed. The effects of small pressure drops in such nozzles during take-off and at low flight velocities are also discussed, as well as the resulting effect on the thrust of the engine. The characteristics of two non-regulated Laval nozzles are shown and the effects of different pressure drops are pointed out. Regulated Laval nozzles are also discussed briefly and their shortcomings at supersonic flights indicated. Self-regulating nozzles of the two types, the plug nozzle and a nozzle equipped with an ejector, are discussed. The effect of different pressure drops in the plug nozzle on its performance is discussed and its characteristics are compared with those of a Laval nozzle. The operation of a nozzle with an ejector at different pressure drops and its performance characteristics are also discussed. Finally, a formula is derived for calculating the thrust of an engine having a nozzle with an ejector. (Author)
