The report assesses the work which has been done in the United Kingdom in the field of rail wear and rail wear measurement. The principal types of rail wear are discussed along with the effects of variations in track and traffic conditions on rail wear rates. Details are given of the comparative wear tests carried out on various grades of rail steel both in the laboratory and under service conditions. Recommendations are made for further work to improve the state of knowledge regarding the properties of wear resistant rails and the effects of various service conditions in works tracks on the life of the rails.
