A fixed base simulator study of direct lift control as applied to the VC-10 aircraft is described. The practical limitations imposed by factors such as the small spoiler authority to control lift, the power control dynamics, and the c.g. range over which the system must operate are included. A degree of improvement in longitudinal handling can be obtained from DLC, but it seems from this work that the most promising arrangement lies in a combination of DLC and a 'manoeuvre boost' input to the elevator. Confirmation by flight trials of the improved performance in the landing flare is needed, because of the difficulties of simulating this phase of flight. (Author)
