A model of the E 573 rocket motor exhaust jet was prepared. From this model, the echoing areas of the exhaust gases at three radar frequencies, C-band (5 GHz), X-band (10 GHz), and J- or Ku-band (15 GHz) were calculated. The variation of echoing area with aspect angle was determined, and it was shown that, for this particular exhaust jet and frequency range, the echoing area depends only slightly on transmitter frequency. The variation of echoing area, with position along the jet axis, and the frequency distribution of the scattered power are also shown. (Author)
