The context, objectives and main requirements of a robotic servicing demonstrator, i.e., a physical ground model of an external servicing manipulator, which is planned to become part of the ESTEC Robotics Laboratory, is described. The ROSED is meant to contribute to: robotic technology demonstration and evaluation; engineering support to HERA (Hermes Robotic Arm); familiarization of personnel; and assessment of training needs. Some general considerations about ground models of large space manipulators are mentioned, as well as some preliminary results of the ROSED Initiating Phase, an ongoing study covering the conceptual design aspects.
