Investigations into the factors affecting the propagation of ultrasonic waves in railroad rail are described. A collection of over forty new and used rail were studied. Velocities were obtained for critically refractured longitudinal and shear waves and Rayleigh waves propagating along the rail head upper surface, and for bulk longitudinal and shear waves propagating in the head.
