The last half of the 20 century has witnessed the evolution of air power into a warfare area that is indispensable to the success of the operational and tactical commander. The relationship of the air forces to the naval and ground maneuver forces has often been a point of contention between the armed services and in recent years the offensive aspects of air power have overshadowed the force protection mission. The introduction of new technologies and the proliferation of theater ballistic missiles and cruise missiles requires the armed services to review the role of air power in relation to the overall mission of the Joint Force Commander. As the size of the armed forces shrinks it will become more important to maximize the synergy between available forces. Joint doctrine needs to evolve with the threat and incorporate technological advances in weaponry and command and control systems. Examining the evolution of air power's role to the joint mission provides insight as to how tomorrow's doctrine can be developed to meet the emerging threat.
