This basic research task on supersonic combustion ramjets includes work in three primary focus areas: 1) fuel control and fuel injection, wherein fundamental aspects are studied for gaseous, supercritical, and multiphase fuels; 2) ignition, flameholding, and flame propagation in supersonic flows, wherein fundamental aspects are studied with a view toward improving performance in a high-speed combustor; and 3) multidisciplinary laser measurements for benchmarking modeling and simulation and for elucidating the physics of high-speed flows. The motivation for this program is the need to develop the science basis to enable the design of high-speed, air-breathing propulsion systems.
