The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) is proposing to operate the MSX spacecraft to gather information related to the following objectives: demonstration of midcourse sensor functions; collection of midcourse target and background data; integration of critical sensor technologies; and demonstration of surveillance from space. The data gathered will be used to design midcourse sensors. The proposed action is to develop, launch, and operate the MSX spacecraft and to conduct a target program. Activities required to support this program include: 1) fabrication, assembly, and testing of the experiments at Utah State University/Space Dynamics Laboratory (USU/SDL), Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Lincoln Laboratory (MIT/LL); and 2) the launch and subsequent operation of the MSX spacecraft. This action will use existing facilities at USU/SDL, JHU/APL, and MIT/LL.
