This volume evaluates the various power plants. It was necessary, at the beginning to determine the approximate size and shape of the machinery spaces. This required that assumptions be made concerning the approximate size and shape of the ship hulls. Therefore: The hull forms were assumed to be geometrically related to the GLACIER, with length, beam, and draft varied independent of each other. It was assumed that the machinery compartment lengths would be limited by a requirement that the ships be able to survive two-compartment flooding. (Author)
