The Spacelab flight unit offgassing test procedures and results are described. Up to 22 different potentially toxic volatile compounds were detected in the avionics air loop and 20 in the cabin air loop. The high sensitivity of the analytical method permits the identification of compounds down to the microgram/cum level. Comparison of contaminant concentrations with the corresponding specifications as identified in NHB 8060.1B, shows quite clearly that the contaminant levels are all several orders of magnitude lower than specified.
