In the new road safety programme for Stockholm for 2009-2020 a new target for traffic safety has to be set. We recommend the following new traffic safety target for Stockholm in 2020: a 40% reduction in the annual number of killed or severely injured in traffic. This recommendation is based on an assessment using eight safety performance indicators. These are four road user behavioural targets (speed, use of bicycle helmets, use of seatbelts, drinking and driving) and four infrastructure targets (standard of main roads, standard of local roads, management and maintenance and strategy for heavy goods vehicles). It is realistic to reach the recommended overall road safety target if these eight performance targets are fulfilled.
