Manned operations in an orbiting laboratory for extended periods of time have many characteristics in common with work in the deep sea, and are accompanied by a number of similar problems. The scenario of manned payload operations in space are addressed: some aspects with their parallel in deep sea work become evident. The analysis results from a study carried out with the ESA/ESTEC in preparation for the Columbus program, and uses as a baseline the lessons learned from past manned missions. Some highlights of these results are presented.
