This paper describes the functional methodologies and development processes used to integrate the SITAN autonomous navigation algorithm with the Digital Terrain Management and Display System (DTMDS) for real-time demonstrations aboard the AFTI/F-16 aircraft. Heretofore, the SITAN algorithm has not been implemented for real-time operation aboard a military aircraft. The paper describes the implementation design of the DTMDS and how the elevation data base supported by the digital map generator subsystem is made available to the SITAN algorithm. The effects of aircraft motion as related to SITAN algorithm timing and processor loading are evaluated. The closed-loop implementation with the AFTI aircraft inertial navigation system (INS) was specifically selected for the initial demonstration. (ERA citation 10:029608)
