The study is an exploration of the relation between socio-economic characteristics of households and local traffic generation (passenger car trips). It is based on analysis of data compiled by the Illinois Division of Highways for its Traffic Survey. The main objectives were to determine if certain presently unutilized socio-economic data might serve as a substitute for the traditional origin-destination survey or might reduce the cost of such surveys, and to determine if traffic volume, both in the subject community and in other similar communities, could be predicted on the basis of anticipated changes in these household characteristics (including socio-economic level of household, area density of households, distance from central business district, number of cars per household, number of persons per household, length of residence, percent of households in given zone with cars, age and make of car, value of house, sex and race of household members, trip purpose, trip time of day, and age of driver).
