In 1976 it was decided in the Netherlands to allow women into almost all functions within the armed forces, which included flying. Being one of the few female helicopter pilots of the 298 squadron for two years now, some of the practical problems female helicopter pilots in the R.N.L.A.F. were (and still are) faced with, are highlighted. Presently there are only 9 female helicopter pilots in the Netherlands Air Force; one female transport aircraft pilot; and one female jet aircraft pilot. Being unfamiliar with the last two categories, the experiences of myself, 8 female colleagues and the few predecessors are the focus of interest. Because of the low numbers, this is a highly personal account.
