The objective of the Improved Metropolitan Area Transportation System (IMATS) is to decrease single-occupant vehicle (SOV) use and increase multiple-occupant vehicle (MOV) use. The IMATS employs a variety of vehicles, including the Instant Rent-A-Car, the Multiple Occupant Commuter Taxi, conventional taxis and public transit. Vehicle use is integrated or scheduled by means of a central processor. The three key elements involved in the development and implementation of IMATS are technology, operations, and user cost. The evaluation results show that there is good potential for bringing the IMATS concept to market.
