The N.S. SAVANNAH was refueled in 1968 for the first time, marking the first refueling of any nuclear merchant ship. Irradiated components had to be moved from the ship to the pier and then to storage on land. This was accomplished by use of shielded casks that contained remote handling mechanisms designed specifically for N.S. SAVANNAH reactor components. The land storage facilities had been modified to permit extensive maintenance work to be performed on the control rod drives while the reactor head was in the facilities building. The entire operation was accomplished in slightly less than 2 months. The report describes the planning, training of personnel, and all steps of the refueling operation. (Author)
