The objectives of the research were to document the changes that need to occur in the transportation landscape to facilitate intermodal tranpsort and to identify research challenges to be faced for the future of increased intermodal traffic. In pursuing these objectives an examination was made of institutional impediments to intermodal transportation at the federal, state, and local level. Additionally, research challenges were discussed as they related to the areas of rail network optimization, service reliability, U.S.-Mexico cross-border logistics, and the intermodal transport of non-containerized freight.
