The definition of the upper structural assembly of the Ariane 5 launcher is addressed. The philosophy of multiple payload launching is analyzed and the different upper configurations presented. The general dimensioning requirements are reviewed: payload factors and flight environment, particular requirements coming from the kinematics and dynamics of the payloads, and general launcher architecture. Special attention is given to the non-uniform load flow transmission and the pyrotechnic shocks induced in structure separation. The main structural tests of the upper structures are outlined.
