This report presents the results of a study to determine a suitable location for a homing antenna on seven specific Army aircraft. The following aircraft were involved in the study: Sioux OH-13 (rotary wing); Raven OH-23 (rotary wing); LOH OH-6A (rotary wing); Chinook CH-47 (rotary wing); Flying Crane CH-54 (rotary wing); Seminole U-8 (Fixed wing); AAFSS AH-56A (rotary wing). The patterns were recorded using one-fifth scale models of the OH-13, OH-23, and OH-6A, one-eighth scale models of the CH-47, CH-54, and U-8, and one-tenth scale model of the AH-56A. The homing antenna was scaled to the same scale as the aircraft model being tested. In some cases more than one type of homing antenna was tried at the same location so that the proper type of antenna could be chosen. The results show that 100 percent favorability for homing was obtained for the OH-13, CH-47, U-8, and AH-56A aircraft. An analysis of the patterns on the OH-23, OH-6A, and CH-54 shows that the best solutions, although not 100 percent acceptable are promising enough to justify testing on a full scale basis. (Author)
