The aircraft demonstrated a 1.6-hour mean time between failures and a 1.5-hour mean time between aircrew writeups. The overall aircraft reliability was significantly degraded by the low reliability of the flight controls and most avionics subsystems. The reliability of most non-avionics subsystems was acceptable. The contractor predicted that 23.8 maintenance manhours per flying hour would be required, and 48.0 manhours were actually measured; the difference was attributed to low reliability. Except for excessive removal, bench check, and replacement of good components during troubleshooting, the maintainability of the FB-111A was good.
