State governments conduct traffic monitoring for many reasons, and Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) is an effective tool used to collect traffic and truck weight data. WIM equipment provides highway managers and planners with traffic volume and classification data by time of day and day of week and with loadings that heavy vehicles place on pavements and bridges. Planners can use the data to reduce queues, congestion, and lane changes as well as increase vehicle throughput. Motor vehicle enforcement officers use heavy truck axle load data to plan enforcement activities, and can reduce the number of violators missed because of facility closing. The data collected may also be used for legislative and regulatory issues.
