The basic theoretical and practical principles of the operation of a Laser Doppler Aneometer (LDA) and its application to a transonic blowdown wind tunnel are presented. Examples of work which have already been carried out in the flow regime are presented. Attention is drawn to the importance of adequate seeding of the air. A possible LDA system for a transonic wind tunnel is proposed.
