By means of routes which actually exist it can be determined what factors are influencing in the choice of routes in road networks. In an investigation performed in the Rijnstreek-West it was determined that in addition to travel times also the time losses occurring at road intersections can be of great influence upon the choice of routes. In general it can be noted that the waiting times are considered two to three times as important as the travel times. It is therefore very difficult to assess the time losses at road intersections explicitly in the description of networks. Some estimates can be made however in the manner in which the time losses can be taken into account. The functions which were used for the time loss as a function of intensity and capacity do not have any real values when intensity is greater than the capacity. The use of better control strategies in using traffic-dependent controls should provide better utilization of road intersections in road networks. This report contains a series of calculations and formulas for determining route choices and optimized utilization of road networks.
