Data on walk trips should be gathered at the same time, and on the same basis, as data on vehicle trips collected in transportation surveys. This is partly because walking is an important transport mode in its own right, but also because the absence of walk data is a serious source of error in transport models. Accurate forecasts of vehicle trips (especially short distance public transport trips and the distribution of origins and destinations) depend on the interaction of these vehicle trips with walking.
