Public and specialized transportation (transit) providers in Montana and other states use a variety of methods for collecting fares from riders, invoicing agencies for rides, and collecting ridership data. The purpose of the project is to determine the feasibility of implementing various technologies in transit systems within Montana to assist in the collection and accounting of passenger fares. Specific components of the research included reviewing the state of the practice in the transit industry, reviewing current technologies in Montana, conducting a requirements analysis, reviewing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) issues, conducting a benefit/cost ratio analysis, and providing an implementation plan. Based on the findings from these tasks, researchers also developed recommendations for MDT, which included procurement of a high-value customer data reporting system, development of a pilot program for additional technologies, and development of a one-stop center that would leverage technologies implemented to support transportation (transit) providers and provide a 'one-call, one-website' portal for customers and clients.
