The publication provides fuel consumption rates for actual highway operation of six five-axle, diesel-powered, tractor-semitrailer combinations at various speeds in unimpeded traffic flow. The vehicles were all in general trucking use by established companies, and each had been operated for more than a year before the tests were made. The presentation of the fuel-consumption results should provide a useful planning tool for determining the most effective speeds at which vehicles of this kind can be operated. Also, the effects on diesel fuel consumption of changes in speed can be determined.
