The author argued that the character and scale of U.S. (and other Western) ASW activities has been such that one could plausibly expect the Soviets to be concerned with the security of their SSBN force; that current technical realities appear to encourage them to increase their capabilities to contend with a potential threat to that force from Western ASW systems; that the air-capable ship is likely to be assigned both pro- and anti-SSBN missions; and that the pro-SSBN task may lie closer to possible achievement.
