A high accuracy compatible DME system was tested to determine the video and indicator distance readout accuracy on the approach path to NAFEC Runway 13-31, Atlantic City Airport, New Jersey. The ground station was a Hazeltine (Model DTB), (formerly used in the now decommissioned pulse-multiplex NSME system), modified to operate at high accuracy in the normal DME frequency band. The airborne DME receiver was a high accuracy modified AVQ-70. The flight test results show the video system error and the indicator system error to be well within the plus or minus 250-foot tolerance specified by FAA Contract ARDS 585. Various design problems were investigated, the worst of which resulted in a mean shift at close ranges due to system overload. Limited tests indicated that the high accuracy DME system is compatible with the VORTAC system. (Author)
