The report identifies and describes emerging nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods that can potentially be used to inspect commercial transport and commuter aircraft for structural damage. The nine categories of emerging NDI techiques are acoustic emission, x-ray computed tomography, backscatter radiation, reverse geometry x-ray, advanced electromagnetics (including magneto-optic imaging and advanced eddy current techniques), coherent optics, advanced ultrasonics, advanced visual and infrared thermography.
